The Sun: tarot card meaning

The Sun

What the card shows

A big yellow sun with a calm face looks straight at you, with straight and wavy rays spreading out. Sunflowers bloom above a brick wall. A naked child wearing a wreath and a red feather rides a white horse with arms flung wide, while a long orange banner streams beside him.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

joy, satisfaction, clarity, warmth, ease

The Sun describes a clear, warm state where things feel good without needing a reason. The card can point to joy, a sense that matters are going fine, and real satisfaction with a result you haven't talked yourself out of enjoying. The child on the horse holds no reins and shows no fear of falling: he trusts both the movement and himself. Imagine finishing a long piece of work and noticing that you want to step outside instead of starting the next thing. Let yourself do that, and admit honestly that something went well.

Reversed meaning

muted joy, tiredness, partial satisfaction, doubting success

Reversed, the Sun keeps its warmth but turned down: the joy is there, only weaker than it could be. The cloud may be small, such as tiredness, a habit of hunting for flaws first, or comparing yourself with other people's wins. Notice what dims your pleasure in good things. Someone praises your project, and you spend the evening thinking about one small slip in it. The good part is still good. It just needs a little more attention before you can feel it.

In love and relationships

In love, the Sun can speak of ease: with this person you don't have to watch every word. In a couple, the card suggests spending time together with no occasion and no talk about the relationship, such as a walk or cooking dinner. If you are single, it hints at readiness to talk openly instead of playing indifferent. A warm tone is worth more than an impressive one.

At work

At work the Sun can mark a stretch when things succeed and others can see it. Name exactly what worked, whether an approach, an agreement or a team habit, so you can repeat it on the next task. It is a good time to share the result with colleagues or to ask for a role you would enjoy. Saying so directly beats waiting to be noticed.

A question for yourself

What is going well for me right now, and when did I last let myself enjoy it?

For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
