Judgement: tarot card meaning

Judgement

What the card shows

An angel with golden curls leans out of the clouds and blows a long golden trumpet hung with a white banner bearing a red cross. Below, naked people of different ages rise from open grey boxes standing in water, arms raised toward the sound. Snowy mountains and the sea lie behind them.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

taking stock, renewal, turning point, answering a call, decision

Judgement is the moment a signal sounds and you can look back over the whole of what you have lived. The people on the card are standing up and looking skyward: they answer a call that something in them had been waiting for. The card hints at taking stock, to a turning point, and to readiness to start differently after what you have understood about yourself. After three years in one city, you suddenly see clearly that you want a different life, and it is no passing thought. Calmly list what the past taught you, then decide what you bring along and what stays behind.

Reversed meaning

postponing, weakness, self-doubt, delay

Reversed, the signal is audible and you act as though it isn't. Weakness here means a shortage of energy or nerve, and a habit of postponing. The decision has already ripened, yet you hunt for another reason to wait: one more opinion, one more month. Maybe a request to move to another team was written long ago and sits in your drafts. Ask yourself what you are really waiting for, then set a date by which the decision gets made, even if the first step is small.

In love and relationships

In relationships, Judgement draws attention to a conversation that has become due: you both sense it is time to talk about where things are heading. Look back at what you have been through together and say honestly what works and what doesn't. For a long-term couple, it can be a chance to begin again with what you already know about each other.

At work

At work, the card can mark a stage that is closing: the end of a project, a year, a phase. It is a good moment to ask which parts of your role still interest you and which continue out of habit. If a decision about a change of team or direction has matured, say it aloud to whoever it depends on.

A question for yourself

Which decision have I already made inside, but not yet said aloud?
