Saturn return calculator

The date transiting Saturn comes back to the exact degree it occupied when you were born.

The birth date alone gives you dates within a day or two. Add the time and city and they become exact.

The city sets the time zone, so the result stops depending on guesswork.

Saturn takes about twenty nine and a half years to travel the zodiac, so somewhere around the age of twenty nine it arrives back at the precise degree it held at your birth. That event is the Saturn return, and it is the closest thing astrology has to a scheduled appointment: it happens to everyone, at roughly the same age, whether or not anyone is paying attention.

Most tools answer this question with a rule of thumb, "between twenty seven and thirty one". This one runs the actual ephemeris and finds the crossings. That matters because of the retrograde loop: Saturn often passes the natal degree, backs over it, and crosses it a third time, so the return can be a single date or three dates spread across a year.

How to read your return

One return, up to three passes

When Saturn stations retrograde near your natal degree you get three crossings. Astrologically they are one event with three acts, not three separate returns.

What it is about

Saturn is read as structure, commitment and consequence. The return tends to test what was built on borrowed footing and to confirm what was built properly.

The second return

Around fifty eight to sixty the cycle repeats. The first return is usually about becoming an adult on your own terms; the second is usually about what you keep.

Saturn return questions

At what age is the Saturn return?

Usually between twenty nine and thirty, because Saturn orbits the Sun in about twenty nine and a half years. The exact age varies by a few months depending on where Saturn was in its slightly elliptical orbit at your birth.

Why does my return have three dates?

Because of retrograde motion. Saturn crosses your natal degree moving forward, appears to reverse and crosses it again, then turns direct and crosses it a third time. All three belong to the same return.

Do I need my birth time for this?

Not strictly. Saturn moves at most about a tenth of a degree a day, so an unknown birth time shifts the dates by a day or two at most, and we tell you the margin. A birth time only becomes essential if Saturn sat right on a sign boundary.

Does the Saturn return mean something bad will happen?

No. It marks a period, not an outcome, and this calculator returns dates rather than predictions. What people describe as difficulty is usually the cost of a structure that was already unstable.

What is a Saturn opposition or square?

They are the quarter points of the same cycle, near ages seven, fourteen, twenty one, then thirty seven, forty four and fifty one. This calculator covers the returns themselves.
