Moon sign calculator

The Moon in your chart is the part of you that does not perform: what you need, how you settle, what you reach for when the day goes wrong.

The date is enough to start. Add the time and city if you can: the Moon crosses a sign every two and a half days, so a birthday near a boundary really can go either way.

The city sets the time zone, so the result stops depending on guesswork.

The Moon is the fastest body in astrology, covering roughly thirteen degrees a day and changing sign every two and a half days. That is why a Moon sign is a genuinely personal marker in a way a Sun sign is not: everyone born in your month shares your Sun, but your Moon sign narrows the group by a factor of twelve.

It also means the answer can be ambiguous. If you were born on a day when the Moon crossed from one sign into the next, then without a birth time and city there is no honest single answer. This calculator handles that case by naming both signs and the exact moment of the crossing, so you can see which side of it your birth falls on.

How to read your Moon

The private register

Where the Sun shows what you are building, the Moon shows what you need in order to keep going: rest, reassurance, structure, freedom, company, quiet.

Your first reaction

The Moon tends to describe the response that arrives before you have decided anything: the flinch, the reach for a familiar habit, the way you self-soothe.

Inherited patterns

Traditionally the Moon is read as the mother line and early home: the emotional grammar you learned before you could examine it.

Moon sign questions

What does my Moon sign mean?

It describes your emotional and instinctive nature, what makes you feel safe, and how you process what happens to you. It is the inward counterpart to the Sun sign, which is the part of you other people see.

Do I need my birth time for the Moon sign?

Often not, but sometimes yes. On most days the Moon stays in one sign the whole day and the date is enough. If your birth date falls on a sign change, the time decides the answer, and we will tell you when that happens.

Why does the city matter if I already gave the time?

Because a clock time without a place has no time zone. Noon in Lisbon and noon in Tokyo are nine hours apart, and the Moon travels about five degrees in nine hours.

How fast does the Moon change sign?

It moves twelve to fifteen degrees a day and takes about two days and eleven hours to cross a sign, completing the zodiac in roughly twenty seven and a third days.

Is the Moon sign the same as my moon phase?

No. The sign says where the Moon was against the zodiac; the phase says how the Moon and Sun were angled to each other. They are independent, and this calculator returns the sign.
