Major Arcana 6
The Lovers: tarot card meaning

What the card shows
A winged figure with flame-coloured hair hovers in front of a bright sun, palms open over a naked man and woman below. A fruit tree with a snake coiled around it stands behind the woman, a tree with tongues of fire behind the man, and a mountain rises in the distance between them.
Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.
Upright meaning
attraction, choice, closeness, honesty, trials passed
The Lovers is about attraction, and about a choice you cannot make halfway. In the image the two stand openly with nothing hidden, and something larger than either of them watches over. The card draws attention to a relationship where you are able to be yourself, or to a decision where your wishes and your convictions need to be lined up. The attraction here is tied to trials: it deepens when two people get through hard things together and stay honest with each other. Look at what you are truly drawn to, and whether you are ready to answer for it.
Reversed meaning
unfulfilled plans, discord, mismatched wishes, postponed choice, things unsaid
Reversed, the Lovers can show a gap between words and actions: plans stay on paper and the couple has stopped negotiating. Two people may talk for years about moving in together, each waiting for the other to take the first step. The card invites you to check what you are actually staying quiet about. It can also describe a choice outside a relationship, where you delay an answer because you do not want to give up either option. Discord can be read as a prompt to compare expectations.
In love and relationships
In love, this card usually describes strong mutual interest and a moment to say what you are offering each other: a first frank conversation, a decision to share a home, a confession you kept putting off. If things have been smooth for a long time, ask when you last talked about something important without watching the other person's reaction. Closeness grows where you do not have to stay on guard.
At work
At work, the Lovers often relates to a choice between two offers or directions, and to how well the one you pick matches your values. It can also point to a good partnership with a colleague, where you complement each other. Before you say yes, write down what you like in each option and what you are willing to give up for it.
A question for yourself
Which choice am I putting off because I do not want to lose anything?
For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
