The Fool: tarot card meaning

The Fool

What the card shows

A young traveler in a tunic patterned with flowers and small suns walks along the edge of a cliff, head tipped back toward a huge sun. A stick with a bundle rests on his shoulder, he holds a white rose in his other hand, and a white dog jumps at his heels. Snowy peaks stand behind him.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

new beginning, trust, spontaneity, lightness, leap of faith

The Fool is stepping toward a drop while looking at the sky. The card describes a start with no plan and no guarantee: you are about to try something where you have no track record. Older readings attach folly, excess and a kind of intoxication with novelty to it, so a fair question is whether curiosity or just the thrill is driving you right now. The figure carries only a small bundle, which hints that at the very beginning there is not much to lose. Think of one small trial run you could make this week without burning everything else behind you.

Reversed meaning

carelessness, apathy, vanity, recklessness, missed details

Reversed, the Fool draws attention to carelessness: you keep moving and miss things that are plain to others, such as a deadline, someone's request, or your own tiredness. Older readings add apathy and vanity. That can look like not wanting to go anywhere at all, or like loud confidence with no preparation behind it. Stop for a minute to ask what you are overlooking, and whether it is because you are bored or because you want to look brave. Often one checked fact is enough.

In love and relationships

In love the Fool can mean a new acquaintance, or a moment when a couple tries something unplanned: a trip without a route, a conversation about what used to go unsaid. Try looking with curiosity and without a ready-made script. Lightness is good until it becomes a habit of leaving things unsaid.

At work

At work the card can refer to a new project, a change of direction, or a first day in a different role. It suggests asking naive questions and trying things, since a newcomer has the right to. Decide in advance what result counts as enough for a trial. If you are only about to begin, make a draft and let it be imperfect.

A question for yourself

Which step am I putting off only because I cannot see how it ends?

For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
