Strength: tarot card meaning

Strength

What the card shows

A woman in a white gown, with a flower wreath and an infinity sign above her head, gently holds a lion's muzzle while the animal does not resist. The lion bows toward the ground, mouth slightly open, a floral garland woven into its mane. A blue mountain and green hills stand behind them under a yellow sky.

Deck: the 1909 edition, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith.

Upright meaning

courage, patience, generosity, self-control, gentle energy

Strength shows up in this card as quiet confidence. The woman does not wrestle the lion: she rests her hands on its jaw and the animal yields. The card can suggest that anger, fear or a strong craving responds to patience. Think of a hard conversation where you stay level, or a habit you work on kindly rather than breaking it over your knee. Generosity belongs here too: letting a sharp remark pass because you have the strength to. Look at which of your inner lions is asking for attention right now.

Reversed meaning

abuse of power, weakness, inner discord, outburst, self-doubt

Reversed, Strength hints at two extremes. In one, you lean on others or on yourself: snapping, giving orders, proving a point at any cost. In the other, you feel worn out and divided, and it seems your instincts are steering you, not the other way round. Notice which of these you are in, and ask yourself what you need: rest, support or a conversation. A little self-doubt is normal here and says nothing bad about your character.

In love and relationships

In a relationship, Strength speaks of patience and the ability to hold strong feelings, yours and your partner's. For example, you notice you are angry and, instead of a reproach, you take a pause and later explain what hurt. The card can describe a gentle but steady bond where each person feels safe. Look at where you push and where you give in to avoid a fight.

At work

At work, the card can describe handling a difficult task or a difficult person without pressure. It suits negotiations where calm matters, and jobs that need endurance: a long project, training a newcomer, awkward feedback. Think about where your persistence helps the team and where it gets in the way.

A question for yourself

What in me needs the most attention right now, and how could I treat it gently?

For entertainment and reflection. The cards do not predict the future and do not replace a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser.
